New Term

New Term

I haven’t posted in a bit because I’ve taken a bit of a break. I had a week off from classes. Then the new term got started and it was all the beginning of the term stuff. I’m taking Life Drawing 3 and Still Life Painting. So life drawing is more of the same. The still life class painting is more new—we’re supposed to really learn acrylic painting here. The first week I had to do a grayscale painting of geometric forms. Here’s what I came up with:

It actually turned out better than I expected. Which isn’t to say it’s good—it isn’t—but it’s not atrocious. I am starting to get a better feel for acrylics, which is a good thing. This week I’m starting a project painting a couple bell peppers—one green and one red. We have to do a grayscale painting first, and then next week we’ll be doing color over  that. This is the technique (I think it’s called glazing) that we were supposed to do on the flying cats project I’ve talked about previously, but I messed it up there because I didn’t know what I was doing. This time I hope I can execute it better. I’ll do my next post on that, most likely.

In my life drawing class, we had to do four figure drawings. This is my favorite:

My instructor didn’t like the sloppy marks going every which way in this one. I was told to use blending stumps. I mean I get that, but I’m not a fan for whatever reason. I like seeing the marks. I do that with pencil too, though admittedly the marks in this drawing were definitely sloppier. This week we have to do four drawings of the pelvic/ribcage region.

So I’m looking forward to improving this term. I’m impatient. I want to be good now, not later. If only I could pause time and get those 10,000 hours in right away.
